Klima Fishing Village

Location: Klima Fishing Village on the Island of Milos, Greece:

Along the shoreline of Klima, colorful doors and balconies line a row of traditional seaside homes known as Syrmata. Built directly into the rocks beside the water, these historic boat houses once sheltered fishing boats before they set out to sea. 

Walking along the quiet dock, the gentle sound of water lapping against the shore echoed between the buildings. Boats rested beside the white houses with contrasting balconies, doors, and stairs. The bright colors reflected softly in the calm sea. Standing there, it was easy to imagine the rhythm of life that has unfolded here for generations along the coast of Milos.

We walked around the area and found an open shop (shown on the canvas, the building with the yellow balcony). Beach art pieces hung at the entrance of the shop. I went in to take a peek. From the outside, the buildings looked like regular homes. However, once we went into one, I noticed how these houses were built into the rocks. These boat houses, known as Syrmata, are why this area of Milos has gained popularity. In the past, these two-story Syrmata homes were used by local fishermen. Today, many have been converted into tourist accommodations, allowing for a unique vacation experience.

This photograph is part of my collection of peaceful coastal moments captured while traveling the world. My hope is that when you display this print in your home, it brings a sense of calm and transports you to the moment it was taken.
