Emerald Waters of Matka Canyon

Location: Matka Canyon near Skopje in North Macedonia

 The emerald waters of Matka Canyon wind peacefully between towering canyon walls, creating one of the most serene landscapes in North Macedonia. The still water reflects the surrounding cliffs while boats glide quietly through the narrow passage carved by the Treska River. 

When my husband and I first arrived, the calm beauty of the canyon immediately drew us in. Within minutes we were on a small boat drifting across the clear water, surrounded by hikers, kayakers, and travelers enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the canyon. 

Our guide spoke passionately about protecting this place, even building small homes for ducks along the water’s edge. Spending the afternoon here made it easy to understand why people feel such a strong connection to this remarkable landscape.
