Matka Canyon

Matka Canyon, North Macedonia: 

Huge canyons towering between the Treska River, known as Matka Canyon, have become a must-visit scenic destination in Skopje, North Macedonia. As I reached the focal point of Matka Canyon I looked out to the teal waters nestled between the mountains and felt at peace. My husband and I knew we had to book one of the many boat tours we saw as we arrived. Within minutes we were gliding over the water with a few other couples in our boat. The water was clean and clear. 

Others were taking advantage of the day by kayaking and hiking along the side of the mountain. Our guide told us how much he loved nature. His company offered free boat trips in exchange for labor to help clean up any trash left in the canyon. He even purchased some ducks and brought them to the lake. There were little houses that he built for them to make sure they stayed and were happy. After an afternoon spent at Matka Canyon, we understood his draw to this serene location.
